UNFATHOMABLE SONG

UNFATHOMABLE

SONG

He woke to the sound of it.

Not a song. Unless a song can pierce your heart and threaten to atomize your soul.

So maybe it was a song after all.

He sat on the bed, startled, panting as if just returning from a long run, a swim against the tide, and pressed his hand to the place where the song hurt the most.

Hand on his chest, he murmured to the siren burning inside: “I’m here. You’re not alone.”

Then, just as suddenly, it was all over.

No more pain or fire.

The voice inside was gone.

He was left on the bed, naked as his soul.

Hollowed-out, forsaken.

A new kind of pain.

Like nothing he had ever felt before.
